Installing Custom Blinds

Instead of employing an expensive window blinds company to come out to your home and install a new set of horizontal blinds for you, you've decided to take the plunge and order online from a discount online retailer. As you wait for your new window coverings to arrive, you begin to doubt your abilities. Can you really hang those new blinds as well as a professional? The answer is -- most certainly -- yes!

When your blinds arrive, begin the installation process by laying out all the parts and tools that you'll need to do the job. Then, use a level and a pencil to mark just below the headrail on your new custom blinds . You will later use these marks to place the right- and left-hand brackets.

Now open the mounting brackets and line them up with the pencil marks you made below the header of the blinds. Mark the location of the screw holes so that you can remove the brackets and drill the holes you need. Once your holes are drilled, use a bit of bar soap on the screw threads to ensure that they go in smoothly. This is a great trick that can -- and should -- be applied whenever you use screws in your walls or windows!

After hanging the side brackets, gently snap the valance clips into the front lip of the headrail. Then, insert the headrail into the side mounting brackets and close the swivel covers to lock your blinds into place. You're one step away from having hung your first set of beautiful custom blinds .

In this final step, you'll be adding a valance to your horizontal blinds by very carefully snapping first the upper and then the lower edge of the included valance into the valance bracket. Now you're free to add curtains or other special touches to finish off your window decor.

Hanging custom blinds is nothing to fear. Once you've mastered your first set, you'll be eager to make over every one of your windows!
